Product Review: Tin Cup

You and your playing partner push your drives toward a lake. One ball sits safely on the edge, while the other has found the hazard. Unfortunately, you’re playing the same ball, same number. Who’s safe and who’s wet? Had you both placed a distinguishing mark on the ball, there would be no issue.

The rules of golf state you must be able to identify your ball ... why not do it in style? Many place a dot or two near the number. That’s quick and easy, but lacks panache.

Enter Tin Cup.

Introduced in 2009, this stainless steel marking device quickly gained traction and rave reviews across the industry. Made in the USA, the shell fits neatly over a golf ball and offers myriad stencil options.

From patriotism (American flag) to passion (cards), animals (dog, gator, bear, etc.) to attitude (smiley face) or affiliation (college), Tin Cup offers a dizzying array of choices. There are also a pair of Marine Corp markers. Choose one of those and the company will make a $5 donation to Birdies for the Brave. Similarly, purchase a (pink) ribbon stencil and a $5 donation will be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

If that’s not enough, the company will create a customized marker with initials or name - up to six characters - logo, or both.

The standard Tin Cup markers sell for $19.95 and come with a bag. The company recommends using an ultra-fine permanent-ink pen (think Sharpie), which they also sell, and offers personalized engraving (up to 15 letters) on the marker.
