The Fusar Poli Formula Offers New Scoring System

(RELEASE) - It is known that in the Golf game two different competition system exist: the competitions with memory, called Medal, and those without memory, the Stableford ones.

The Medal competitions result to be a pure mirror of the game: every golf shot is counted for the final score. In general, the Medal is not a formula beloved by beginners: the beginner prefers to remember a good result in a particular hole and "forget" the one in which he combined a mess.

Frank Stableford found a way to end a competition with dignity despite some wrong performance on a hole: as is well known, on May 16, 1932 at the Golf Wallasay in England the first tournament was held played entirely with the Stableford formula, after being used informally since 1898. The Stableford scoring system favors the enthusiasm of the beginner: the disastrous results are deleted, the good ones give the opportunity to acquire a useful score.

The Fusar Poli Formula (FPF from now onwards) pays tribute to Stableford, correcting what we might call his "little oversight". Actually we hypothesize that in reality Mr. Stableford himself would have introduced the our proposed differentiation, if that had not overly complicated counts in an age that could not rely on the computer as today.

As mentioned, a regular golf course has 18 holes. The designer establishes a list of which he indicates the most difficult hole and so on up to the easiest one.

But the Stableford score does not reward uniformely this difficulty index between the holes: in fact, for the same player’s handicap the score count is the same on the easiest hole and on the most difficult.

For example, the player who scored 3 Stableford points on a difficult does not reflect his ability, because the same three points may have been aggregated with far less effort from any player of equal handicap on one easier hole.

Hence, in addition to being substantially not fair, this mechanism contributes to discourage the commitment of the player.

From here the idea to find a scoring formula that avoids this inequity inherent in the Stableford scoring, rewarding in a quantitatively correct way the skill and the commitment of the player.

The new score in this way promises players the most exciting competitions, in which each hole the player feels he can fairly reward her/his commitment and skill.

For this purpose we have developed an algorithm that calculates the hole score on the basis of a multiplicative factor depending on the hole stroke index: the Stableford score is multiplied by a weight in eighteenth (for 18-hole courses), and this weight will be worth 18 / 18 for the most difficult hole and so on up to the value of 1/18 for the easiest hole.

The final FPF ranking will consist as usual of the sum of the scores obtained for each hole.

The score calculated with the FPF therefore respects more closely the needs of the player to see equally evaluated her/his performance in the most difficult moments of the competition, while also seeing awarded her/his continuity across the field.

With the FPF the player maintains throughout the duration of the competition the enthusiasm of always renewed opportunities, because she/he lives with every hole the opportunity to seize a major achievement.

The winners in the FPF ranking not always coincide with the Stableford ones: this makes the game more challenging, because it allows players to have a higher chance of winning a prize, and encourages them to do their best because they know that the their efforts will be equally evaluated.

The algorithm has been tested statistically by comparing the rankings derived from both the Stableford and FPF formula in order to confirm the validity of the algorithm.

Statistics have shown the expected result that the final FPF ranking often proves to be different from that produced with the Stableford scoring.

Finally it should be noted that the FPF scoring system is particularly accurate: in fact it is on average lower than the classic Stableford scoring, reflecting the rigor of the evaluation. Moreover, in compliance with the rigor of the evaluation, the score maintains an accuracy up to the second decimal place, thus allowing extremely precise and well differentiated rankings.

The idea conveyed by the new Formula found in Italy an immediate favor: in particular aroused the enthusiasm of the President of the Italian Golf Federation Prof. Franco Chimenti and other Board members, thus paving the way for a trial.

We entered the FPF scoring system within the Golf Card American Express circuit in a number of prestigious Clubs selected in different Italian regions.

In addition, the FPF score has already been inserted into the official SysGolf software present in all the Italian Clubs. Each secretariat has therefore been able to compile a FPF ranking in real time along with the normal Stableford ranking. The players were able to compare on the video of their Club House Stableford and FPF scores as the race progressed.

Many golfers could experience the thrill of a new type of competition and win the Fusar Poli Formula Prize in addition to the traditional Stableford awards.

In this experimental season the FPF Special Prize was awarded to the first place in the General Net FPF ranking and consists of the I'mCaddie voice GPS, an innovative device that provides the player the proper distance between the ball and the center of the green, as well as other useful information.

The Golf Clubs reacted very positively to this proposal because it represents a new approach that will encourage new and existing players to take part in a larger number of competitions: in fact the presence of an additional FPF Prize widens the range of the winners.

The Prize cerimony becomes more rich and interesting, enticing the permanence of the players inside the Club enhancing the sponsors’ visibility.

The sponsors, in turn, have the opportunity to link their brand to an innovative initiative, which represents an evolution in the world of golf and in particular conveys an image of greater precision and quality enhancement.

Last but not least, the FPF scoring system represents a new economical leverage for the golf world, involving golf Clubs, sponsors and other operators.

It can be said that the score in the final FPF does not deny the tradition, but stems from tradition to create an innovative evolution: it is no accident that the pay off we chose for our FPF is:

During the 2013-14 golf season, the FPF scoring system had been proposed on an experimental basis in a number of prestigious Clubs selected in different Italian regions, as part of the Golf Card American Express circuit.

In line with the algorithm score, we see that in 7 out of 15 competitions the FPF winner does not coincide with the Stableford Category 1 winner. It is also to be noted that in 6 out of 15 competitions the FPF winner does not coincide with the Stableford General Net winner.

The Fusar Poli Formula is present on the internet with a website (www.formulafusarpoli.com). The website, also in mobile version, provides a convenient table that allows the player to autonomously control from her/his smartphone her/his FPF score hole by hole.

Choosing the hole stroke index, and scrolling horizontally up to the achieved Stableford score, the table gets the FPF score related to that hole.

We also release a free weekly web magazine, The New Stableford Post:

FPF has also Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter profiles. The presence of FPF on the social networks has made it possible to spread around the world the new scoring system idea. Below are recent snapshots of the daily visitors to the site and the distribution of accesses in the world.
