Schwartzel Clinches Victory at Alfred Dunhill Championship

South African wins in his homeland gaming new Nike Lunar Control 4 footwear

(RELEASE) - Nike athlete Charl Schwartzel held his nerve to record a four-shot victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in his native South Africa.

The win was the second in as many weeks on The European Tour for a Nike athlete wearing the new Nike Lunar Control 4 and relying on a Nike RZN Prototype golf ball and Nike Vapor Prototype driver, following four-time Major champion Rory McIlroy’s season-ending triumph at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai the previous week.

The new footwear provides golf athletes a stable platform off which to base their swing, helping to generate power and control from the ground up. The tongue has been redesigned to wrap ergonomically around the ankle and provide a natural break when walking, and the athletic design of the Nike Lunar Control 4 is highlighted by a Swoosh logo on the vamp, an iconic aesthetic most familiar in the Nike Mercurial football boot.

The victory was the 31-year-old’s first since he won at the same venue in 2014, and Schwartzel was delighted to secure the win in front of his home crowd, finishing the tournament third in greens in regulation on his way to posting a 15-under-par four-round total.

In addition to the Nike Lunar Control 4 shoes, Nike Vapor Prototype driver and Nike RZN Prototype ball, Schwartzel gamed Nike Vapor Pro Combo irons and a prototype fairway wood and putter as he sealed his fourth Alfred Dunhill Championship, becoming only the third South African in history to win 10 times on The European Tour.

Schwartzel's Nike Golf Arsenal
- Driver: Nike Vapor Prototype 11.5-degree
- Fairway Wood: Nike Vapor Prototype 3-wood/13-degree, Nike VR Pro Ltd 5-wood/18-degree
- Irons: Nike Vapor Pro Combo (3-AW)
- Wedges: Nike VR Forged 54-degree, 60-degree
- Putter: Nike Method Prototype
- Ball: Nike RZN Prototype
- Apparel: Performance
- Footwear: Nike Lunar Control 4

Tickets for 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Now Available

(Sammamish, Wash.) – Tickets for the 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship to be held at Sahalee Country Club from June 7-12, 2016, are now on sale.

Ticket prices for the Championship range from $10 for each practice round (June 7 - 8) to $75 for a six-day weeklong pass.

Ticket options include:
- Practice Rounds (Tuesday & Wednesday, $10 each day)
- Weekday Championship Grounds (Thursday & Friday, $20 each day)
- Weekend Championship Grounds (Saturday & Sunday, $25 each day)
- “Good Any Day” Flex Ticket ($30 for choice of one-day access)
- Weekly Pass ($75 for grounds access all six days)

Complimentary access to the Championship will be available to active duty military, retirees, active reserve, National Guard, DoD Civilians and their accompanying spouse.  Juniors (age 17 and younger), when accompanied by a ticketed adult, will also receive complimentary access. Military personnel (with identification card), and Junior tickets will be distributed on site at the Admissions & Will Call office on the day of admission.

The official ticket launch was staged alongside the annual University of Washington vs Washington State “Apple Cup” football game on Friday, Nov. 27.  As part of the festivities, LPGA Tour veteran and Golf Channel studio analyst Paige Mackenzie, a former All-American at the University of Washington, hit a precision shot at the Rainier Vista on the UW campus, winning one complimentary “Good Any Day” Flex Ticket for all in attendance at Husky Stadium.

In addition, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship made a $10,000 donation to the University of Washington’s women’s golf program.

Spectators at Sahalee will be part of a new era in golf history, with this being only the second year that a women's major championship is being run by the PGA of America, which operates the annual PGA Championship and bi-annual Ryder Cup competition. The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, held last June at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y., was won for a third consecutive year by Inbee Park.

Sahalee Country Club, site of the 1998 PGA Championship and the 2010 U.S. Senior Open, as well as the 2002 WGC-NEC Championship, becomes the second Washington state site to host a U.S. women’s major. In 1946, Spokane County Club hosted the inaugural U.S. Women’s Open.

The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship — a collaboration between the PGA of America, KPMG and the LPGA Tour — continues the rich tradition of the LPGA Championship. Broadcast in partnership with NBC and Golf Channel, the Championship offers a purse among the highest in women’s golf.  It combines a world-class, annual major golf championship with a women’s leadership summit and an ongoing charitable initiative – all focused on the development, advancement and empowerment of women on and off the golf course.

'DONALD ROSS: Discovering the Legend' DVD Released

(RELEASE) - The legacy of the prolific golf course architect Donald Ross has been brought to life in “DONALD ROSS: Discovering the Legend” a documentary film by Boston-based filmmaker Cob Carlson. The film is one hour and 55 minutes in length, and the DVD also contains 30 minutes of bonus scenes.

The second edition of the film has just been released and contains new graphic elements, and never seen before film footage and photos.

Donald Ross is the greatest golf course designer of all time. He is directly responsible for the creation of four hundred of the most splendid and challenging courses in the world. As the patron saint of golf course architecture, he is widely known for his beautiful, deceptively simple designs that harmonize with the surrounding environment. Ross turned golf course architecture into an art form.

The film, “Donald Ross: Discovering the Legend,” is about a man who left Scotland for America without enough money to buy his second meal, but who became one of the most respected and best paid individuals in all of sports. It features not only the great Ross courses that have hosted major championships, such as Pinehurst #2, Interlachen, Inverness, and Essex, but also lesser-known gems that are revered by their members for their playability and charm.

Viewers will see what the courses look like now, and what they looked like years ago. Clips from archival films, still photos, and architectural drawings are featured. Interviews with renowned golf course architects, professionals, writers, historians, course superintendents, and amateurs critically enrich the film, and explain why Ross’ classic designs have stood the test of time. Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw, Mike Davis, Tom Doak, Rees Jones, Peggy Kirk Bell, Brad Klein, Jim Dodson, and Kyle Franz all appear in the film.

The DVD retails for $20. It makes a wonderful Christmas gift.

Visit www.donaldrossfilm.com for more details, trailers, bonus film scenes, and ordering information.

2015 DietDetective.com Airline Food Investigation

Survey Provides Travelers with the Best In-flight Food including Health Ratings - Making Healthier Choices 35,000 Feet in the Air

(NEW YORK, NY) - According to Airlines For America, there are approximately 25.3 million passengers traveling during the 12-day Thanksgiving travel period, the highest number since the Great Recession Knowing what are the ‘best’ and ‘worst’ choices is a valuable tool for any traveler, so DietDetective.com once again rated the best ‘Calorie Bargains’ and “Calorie Rip-offs” at 35,000 feet.

DietDetective.com releases the 2015 Airline Food Survey rating foods for twelve (12) airlines. The survey assigned a “Health Score” (5 stars = highest rate, 0 star = lowest) based on ten criteria including health and calorie levels of meals, snack boxes and individual snacks, improvement and maintenance of healthy offerings, menu innovation and cooperation in providing nutritional information. The survey includes health ratings, average calories per airline, cost, comments, best bets, food offerings, calories, and exercise equivalents.

“This year Virgin America wins the top spot again with the "healthiest" food choices in the sky with Delta and JetBlue tied for second. Frontier Airlines received the lowest score, was the least cooperative and received a low health rating.  The 'Shame on You' goes to Frontier" says Charles Platkin, PhD, MPH, public health advocate, editor of DietDetective.com and Distinguished Lecturer (professor) at HUNTER College and the City University of New York School of Public Health.

The average number of calories per food item was 360 in 2012; in 2013 it was 388; last year 397, and this year it’s 400 (399.96), a 3 calorie increase over last year. In addition, they also appear to be decreasing the number of choices they offer.

Below are the surveyed airlines’ “Health Scores” (Health Score: 5 stars = highest rating, 0 stars = lowest). For full survey results including full listings of the snack/on-board food, comments, ratings, cost, calories, exercise equivalents, and tips go to www.DietDetective.com or email Mary Cummings, Elizabeth@NutritionPR.com 212 -367-6199 ext 117

Summary of Health Ratings (5 stars = highest rating): Virgin America 4.5 stars, JetBlue 4 stars, Delta 4 stars, Air Canada 3.25 stars, United Airlines 3.25 stars, American 2.75 stars, Alaska Air 2.5 stars, Southwest Airlines 1.5 stars, Allegiant Air 1.5 stars, Spirit Airlines 1.25 stars, Hawaii 1.25 stars, Frontier Air 1 star

Virgin America (www.virginamerica.com)
Cooperation in Providing Nutritional Information: Excellent
Health Score: **** ½
Average Calories Overall (Meals, Snack Boxes and Individual Snacks) = 352.27
Average Snack Box Calories = 394
Average Meal Calories = 408
Average Individual Snack Calories = 259.38
Comments: Average calories for all items on Virgin America fell this year from 386.25 to 352.27 – a 34 calorie drop – that’s good news. But I still don’t understand why VA doesn’t put all their nutritional information on their website and in the air. Another year and the snacks are still the same – can’t we get at least one super healthy snack? How about an apple or an orange? But I am impressed that the total for the average meal has dropped by more than 70 calories - a 15 percent reduction. Nice work.
Best Bets: Avoid the individual snacks, since none of them is very healthy. Even the nuts, which are the best choice, are high in calories if you consume the entire package.  For breakfast try the Udi's Granola with Yogurt and Fruit, which is a bit high in sugar but overall low in calories at 330. The best snack box is the Protein Meal with hummus, nuts and tuna; the others are a bit high in calories and are not really worth it. For kids, skip the Jet Set Kid Pack if you can, and go for the half peanut butter and jam sandwich (which unfortunately jumped 60 calories from last year). It's still a better choice.
Best Bets: For the free snacks (on flights of more than 1.5 hours) the peanuts are the best choice. None of the "for sale" individual snacks is a good choice – still – same as last year. If you do get the nut mix, make sure to share it with at least two others. The snack boxes are very high in calories too. However, there are some good choices within the EATS Tapas box; you can certainly eat the hummus, bruschetta, olives, almonds, apricots and dark chocolate. Skip the rest, and make this a meal, not a snack.

The reality is that Delta is a big airline and has a complicated menu. It changes depending on where you are flying, so make sure to check below and online to see the food choices before you’re in the air. Of the breakfast options, on almost all flights you will see the continental breakfast. It’s 300 calories, but you can skip the muffin and save calories. If you’re on a transcontinental flight, your best bet is the LUVO Fresh Breakfast Medley (without the muffin). For Lunch/Dinner on regular westbound flights, the LUVO Grilled Chicken Wrap, and on eastbound flights the LUVO Roast Turkey & Havarti Wrap, are good choices (the sandwiches are available in reverse from last year). Again, you can skip the cookie to save calories. For Lunch/Dinner transcontinental flights the LUVO Quinoa Crunch Wrap Snack Box is a good choice and will fill you up; you can skip the cookie to save calories if you want. Don’t fall for the high calories in the Roast Beef Slider Combo or the Black Angus Burger.

JetBlue Airways (www.jetblue.com)
Cooperation in Providing Nutritional Information: Very helpful
Health Score: ****
Average Calories Over All (Meals, Snack Boxes and Individual Snacks) = 327
Average Snack Box Calories = 513
Average Meal Calories = 483
Average Individual Snack Calories = 157.75
Comments: Not much has changed with JetBlue except that the calorie count for the snack boxes is up by an average of 30 calories from last year. The individual snacks are still low in calories and nutritional value. The airline is showing progress, however, by posting nutritional information for its meals (See: http://www.jetblue.com/flying-on-jetblue/snacks-and- drinks/nutrition-facts/). All the other foods are packaged, so they must not feel the need.
Best Bets: This is the third year in a row that JetBlue has not done much with its snacksstill nothing much in terms of healthy individual snacks, and no nuts (maybe because of peanut allergies?). And keep in mind, just because the individual snacks are free doesn’t mean you should take more than one. If you buy the New York Nut Factory Omega-3 Mega Mix you need to share it with at least 3 other people, and avoid the jerky if you’re sodium sensitive.
As for the meal boxes, Pump Up has healthy ingredients (Mary’s Gone Crackers-Original, olives, humus and raisins) but remember that it’s a meal and should not be eaten as a snack. Skip the other meal boxes, which are high in calories and fat and offer little in terms of nutrition. If you are on a flight that offers the Eat Up Café, the Yogurt and granola, the Kale & Quinoa Salad, the Spicy Soba & Korean-Style Chicken, and the Veggie Platter are all good choices. Skip the Grilled Chicken and Brie Sandwich, which is very high in calories and low on nutrition.

Air Canada (www.aircanada.com)
Cooperation in Providing Nutritional Information: Excellent
Health Score: (***1/4)
Average Calories Overall (Meals and Individual Snacks) = 327
Average Meal Calories = 343.6
Average Individual Snack Calories = 311
Comments: The staff is VERY helpful in getting the information out, which is nice, and shows that Air Canada cares about its food. It keeps calorie counts low for meals. That’s the good news. The bad news is that when I look for healthy choices, defined as high in nutrient value, there is not a lot to choose from.
Best Bets: For breakfast, the Greek yogurt parfait is good – and will probably fill you up. And while the egg sandwich has bacon, it’s still low in calories. If you’re looking for a snack, pick the Chicken Soup. It's more like a meal than a snack – a good thing. The cashews or almonds need to be shared. The Celery & Carrots with Ranch Dip (if you limit the dip to no more than half) is also a good choice. While the hummus sounds healthy, the pretzels offer little nutritionally, and you’d be better off having a meal if meals are available. The Chicken Club Wrap is good; it has turkey bacon, which is better than regular bacon. I would skip the falafels. On flights of more than 4 hours departing from Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, the sushi is a very good choice.

Alaska Airlines (www.alaskaair.com)
Cooperation in Providing Nutritional Information: Terrible
Health Score: ** ½
Average Calories Overall (Meals and Snack Boxes) = 537
Average Snack Box Calories = 399.5
Average Meal Calories = 606
Comments: For the first few years of the survey Alaska Airlines was excited to be a part of the mix. Now, they say they want to opt out. Too bad Alaska – this is not an opt in–or-out kind of thing. Just because you’re not happy with the results, you can’t pull out. Interestingly enough, the average number of calories in their foods has skyrocketed from 444 to 537. The calories in an average meal also went up significantly from 456 to 606. I was looking over Alaska Airlines’ website, and under its snack section they have the following under the header Healthy Snacks: “Our inflight snacks are a little different, we offer a range of snack boxes that are free of Trans fat, high fructose corn syrup, and MSG.” They’ve actually added the term “Healthy Snacks” since last year – and it’s not entirely accurate. While having no MSG, HGCS or trans fat is good, there are many products that have eliminated those ingredients and are still not healthy – basically, it’s a marketing ploy. Keep in mind, all nutritional information for Alaska Airlines has been calculated by our staff registered dietitian.
Best Bets: Among the snack boxes, the Mediterranean Tapas hasn't changed much from last year and is still the healthiest choice. It has olives, hummus, almonds, dried fruit and even a dark chocolate bar. But keep in mind that 497 calories is a bit high for a "snack" (or even a meal), so it's best if you share the box or have it as a meal replacement. For kids, the snack box may be tempting, but it's always better for children (and adults) to eat a real meal than it is to "snack" aimlessly. FYI, the beef jerky is low in calories but very high in sodium. As far as breakfast goes, you have one high calorie, unhealthy choice and a somewhat healthy Fruit and Cheese plate. For the cheese plate, skip the crackers and half the cheese. For dinner your best bet is the
Homestyle Chicken Dinner at 453 calories.

Southwest Airlines (www.southwest.com)
Cooperation in Providing Nutritional Information: Terrible
Health Score: * 1/2
Average Calories = 108
Comments: Not much variety and not much in terms of nutritional value.
Best Bet: Go for the nuts and skip the pretzels and other items.

Allegiant Air (www.allegiantair.com)
Cooperation in Providing Nutritional Information: Helpful
Health Score: * 1/2
Average Calories Overall (Snack Boxes and Individual Snacks) = 386.22
Average Individual Snack Calories = 421.16
Average Snack Box Calories = 316
Comments: The media representative was better than last year. However, the airline has eliminated many of its healthier selections, including chips and salsa and the fruit and cheese plate as well as its very high calorie Italian sandwich and other not-so-healthy snacks. There are few choices on this airline – there should be more.
Best Bets: Other than the humus, the snack boxes are not great in terms of health (and not just calorie-wise). Avoid the Deli Snack Pack and don’t let your kids near the Wingz Kids Snack Pack. Among the individual snacks, nuts are the healthiest choice.

Spirit Airlines (www.spirit.com)
Cooperation in Providing Nutritional Information: Terrible
Health Score: * 1/4
Average Calories Overall (Individual Snacks and Snack Boxes) = 422.5
Average Individual Snack Calories =409.5
Average Snack Box Calories = 540
Comments: Paraphrasing spokesperson Paul Berry, the airline believes it’s doing passengers a favor. Their media department is arrogant and snarky – they just don’t care, maybe just like the airline? This year, because they didn’t like their previous rating, they decided to not participate. I guess if you drop the price low enough anyone will fly on anything. Again paraphrasing Mr. Berry from last year: passengers should bring their own food and drinks. But in my opinion, the airline has a responsibility to serve foods that are healthier. As a passenger you don’t have too many options if you don’t bring your own food. Why not offer 3 or 4 healthy foods?
Best Bets: The cup of noodle soup at 290 calories is the only choice that will feel like a real meal. Watch out for the Nuggets & Nuts at 600 calories, and all the muffins are at least 400 caloriesnot the best choices unless you split one (if you're the type of person who can do that). Bringing your own food is actually the best option.

Hawaiian Airlines ( www.hawaiianairlines.com)
Cooperation in Providing Nutritional Information: Not Helpful
Health Score: * 1/4
Average Calories Oversll (Meals, Snack Boxes and Individual Snacks) = 588
Average Meal Calories = 954
Average Individual Snack Calories = 452
Average Snack Box Calories = 417
Comments: Wow, they have lots of snacks! And this year I was surprised that the airline actually sent over some nutritional information for its snacks – much better than last year. They claim that getting the info for the other foods would cost $17,000 –which is ridiculous. The airline food provider has exact recipes for these foods; otherwise they would taste different each time, and they don’t. The airline could easily get a nutritionist to do the menu analysis. But, since they didn’t, the calories for all the meals were estimated by Diet Detective nutritionists. Hawaiian is one of the few airlines to serve free food on domestic flights. But watch outtheir food is high in calories.
Best Bets: There are no healthy snacks (or meals either), but if I had to pick one – gosh – the popcorn -- nah. Bring your own. For the complimentary meals try to go light on the breads, treats and dressings. In the end, it would be best to eat before you go, or else you might wind up feeling lethargic and cranky after one of these calorie-heavy meals.

Frontier Airlines (www.flyfrontier.com)
Cooperation in Providing Nutritional Information: Terrible
Health Score: *
Average Individual Snack Calories = 356.14
Comments: Last year the PR / Media team behaved shamefully. They did not provide nutritional information either last year or this year; they were radio silent. So, Frontier, how about getting a few healthy food choices? A meal? A snack box?
Best Bets: Bring your own food. There is nothing healthy here; however, if you’re not sodium sensitive you can grab the jerky.

Product Review: SensoGlove

How’s your golf grip? If you’d like an easy and effective method to find out, SensoGlove may be right for you. With a built-in computer and sensors, this glove monitors your grip pressure and provides instant feedback.

The computer can be transferred
Proper grip pressure is one component in crafting a smooth, consistent swing that provides greater distance, enhanced precision. Cultivating a repeatable swing takes practice and this glove can improve the time you’re on the range.

I was always told that an effective grip is strong enough to hold a bird, but not crush it. Imagery aside, that’s good advice, but SensoGlove takes it to another level. Audio feedback alerts at the moment the grip becomes too tight, which allows the user to learn and maintain correct grip pressure at every point of the swing.

There’s also visual feedback, showing grip pressure at every finger.

But, like a snowflake, no two swings are the same and proper grip pressure for one person may be too weak or too strong for another. What then? The SensoGlove computer is adjustable. Simply raise or lower the threshold that works best for your game.

Sensors in the fingers provide feedback
The best part of SensoGlove may be its ease of use. No need for an involved, confusing app on your smart phone or additional technology. Everything you need is on your hand.

At $89, SensoGlove is an affordable training aid. And, if you’re a range rat and wear out the cabretta leather glove, simply remove the computer and transfer it to a new glove at only $22.48.

Everything about your swing is affected by the way you hold the club. SensoGlove will teach you the best grip for every part of your game.

AccuLock ACE: The Putter Like No Other

(RELEASE) - If there’s a golfer in your life, he or she is sure to appreciate a gift of the AccuLock ACE putter from BioMech. Because not only will the AccuLock improve your favorite golfers’ prowess on the greens, it’s also good for their health.

Unlike any other putter on the market, the AccuLock ACE was invented by scientists, professional sports instructors, and design engineers to produce a more natural and consistent putting stance and stroke. Designed from the body out—meaning the putter fits the body’s natural position, rather than forcing the body into an unnatural and uncomfortable stance—the ACE lets the golfer stand tall, providing a better and more accurate view of the target and the line, and just as important, reducing stress and strain on the lower back.

The AccuLock ACE is the only putter that complements the physiology of the human body with the physics of the optimal putting motion. The results are better, healthier putting.

The ACE—which conforms to the Rules of Golf and will still be legal when the new long-putter regulations go into effect in 2016—is available at biomechsports.com and through select green-grass retailers for $279.99 (retail).

DuoTrac Golf Launches Kickstarter Campaign

4DVP Multi-Sensor Footwork and Swing analyzer is Simple and Fun

(MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.) - DuoTrac Golf, a multi-point, motion tracking, portable sensor-based swing analyzer and mobile app announced the launch of its 28-day Kickstarter campaign that began Nov. 24.

DuoTrac Golf is putting fun into the fundamentals of golf with its simple and accurate swing analyzer and 4-point sensor system. DuoTrac Golf’s 4DVP technology is the only device that captures and displays one of the most important aspects of a golfer’s swing – footwork.

Unlike single sensor products, DuoTrac Golf’s 4-Dimensional View Plane (4DVP) tracks the golfer’s clubface path, transition, face angle at impact, foot roll and weight shift.  By incorporating the measurement of additional reference points, you receive a complete statistical snapshot of your full swing plane and footwork. Without an accurate measurement of all of these critical metrics, single-point data becomes irrelevant and useless.

“We are so excited to unveil our new sports sensor device and app through Kickstarter,” stated Jason Koo, President of DuoTrac Golf. “Our device is designed with the everyday golfer in mind, to solve the inaccuracy issues with golf swing analyzers that miss the mark on providing useful training stats that make the game easier and fun.”  He continued, “The game of golf has lacked breakthroughs in training advancement and has failed to accelerate swing improvement and lower scores for golfers beyond hours and hours of practice and hard work.  DuoTrac Golf is going to be a major game changer.”

With DuoTrac, golfers can now experience a “virtual” on-the-go golf coach. The snapshot visuals on the App target seven key points of the swing.  The device shows your exact swing path and clubface at impact whether open, closed or neutral. In addition, the exclusive foot sensors provide feedback on your transition, weight transfer and follow-through. The data is simple, useful and reliable and helps build long-term consistency versus temporary fixes.

DuoTrac Golf invites family, friends, golf buddies and non-golfers alike, who want to support this cool breakthrough technology to join their Kickstarter Community.  Pledge quickly to get on the ground floor and receive pre-market pricing and insider project updates of this breakthrough device and app.  As a cofunder, you will become part of an exciting team including FOX NFL Sunday and 2016 U.S. Open Host, Curt Menefee, DuoTrac’s partner and brand ambassador.  For more information go to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/681483588/duotrac-golf-the-fundamental-swing-analyzer.

DuoTrac Golf is manufactured by Coach Labs, Inc. The company is developing products for multiple sports to analyze and improve swing performance. Initial production and delivery of DuoTrac Golf is scheduled for early 2016.   Baseball, football, and tennis devices will be released in late spring 2016.

Book Review: Try Fox Tossing: And other Forgotten and Dangerous Sports, Pastimes, and Games

Looking for a good read over the holidays? Try Fox Tossing: And other Forgotten and Dangerous Sports, Pastimes, and Games by Edward Brooke-Hitching.

While this is a golf blog and I’ll say a bit about the golf-related games, I’d be remiss if I didn’t start with the “headliner” sport - fox tossing. Played mainly in 17th century Poland, fox tossing - or fuchsprellen - consisted of a team of two people standing 20-25 feet apart with a strip of netting or fabric between them. The object of the game was to time your tug so the terrified fox would cross the fabric and be launched high into the air.

Thought to have roots in a superstition to bring good luck through the winter months, the cruelty wasn’t limited to foxes. Hares, badgers and wildcats would also be used as unsuspecting equipment.

On to a much more humane, if not frustrating, sport ... golf. Have you ever heard of aerial golf? Well, in the late 1920s, pilots would take off from Curtiss Airfield in Long Island and drop their “tee shots” onto greens at the Old Westbury Golf Club. A partner on the ground would then hole out.

For those more grounded, there was bow-and-arrow golf, where a cry of “fore” would’ve come too late. Also known as archery golf, golfers and archers would compete against each other. The archers would generally have three types of arrows - a flight arrow for the drives, medium approach arrows into the “greens” and a flu-flu for “putting.” Not wanting to destroy the actual greens, holing out was usually to a target (tennis ball on a can or something on a tree).

Considering archery golf also saw it’s height of popularity in the 1920s, there must be some connection to the “Roaring 20s” and free-flowing alcohol that brought out many variations to the sport of golf.

Pre-dating those two and in another part of the world, was phosphorescent golf. Peter Tait, a professor of natural philosophy and golf fanatic, proposed night golf to a group of dinner guests in 1871. The balls would be coated in phosphorescent paint for visibility. All went according to plan until a colleague of Tait’s, Alexander Crum Brown, retrieved his ball from the hole and realized his glove was on fire. The glove’s material reacted to the chemical on the ball, which then spontaneously combusted.

Those are just a few of the interesting sports and games detailed in this book. You may also be interested in the Great Tricycle Regatta, ice tennis or waterfall riding. If fox tossing is more to your liking, enjoy baby boxing, eel-pulling or monkey fighting. To be fair, there was also people throwing.

Dolphin Capital Unveils Fully Renovated Robert Trent Jones Sr., Golf Course

Oceanside golf course at Playa Grande in the Dominican Republic, integrated within Aman’s newest property, Amanera, features what is arguably one of the finest finishes in the game of golf

(MIAMI, FL) – Leading residential resort developer, Dolphin Capital, announced the opening of its latest project, the Amanera resort, to include the fully renovated Playa Grande Golf Course and the latest Aman hotel, Amanera. As the centerpiece of the new resort, the exclusive 18-hole, par-72 course will make Amanera the first fully integrated Aman resort - with both golf and residences - in the world.

Overlooking the crescent-shaped Playa Grande Beach, regarded as one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in the Caribbean, the Playa Grande Golf Course is distinctly characterized by long vistas, cliff-side fairways and meticulously contoured greens.  Ten holes play directly on the ocean, the most of any golf course in the Western Hemisphere, giving it an elite distinction within the international golfing community.

Spanning more than 180 acres (approximately 73 hectares) along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, part of what is widely known as the ‘Green Coast,’ the course features a total of six sets of tees, allowing guests to play from 5,230 yards on forward tees to 7,259 yards from championship tees. Originally designed in 1995 by golf legend Robert Trent Jones, Sr., it has since been extensively revived by his son, famed golf course architect Rees Jones.  It was the last golf course Jones ever created outside the United States before Robert Trent Jones Sr.’s passing in 2000.

“With Rees Jones and his renowned team behind the redesign, coupled with its unique ocean-side location and challenging holes, this course is going to be a natural draw for international golf enthusiasts,” said Katerina Katopis, Director at Dolphin Capital.

“There is rich history behind the foundation of this golf course, thanks to my father’s vision and the legacy he built beneath it,” says Rees Jones, who has designed or redesigned more than 170 courses throughout the span of his career so far. “It has been an honor to work meticulously in tandem with Dolphin Capital to essentially revive and enhance what was originally a dramatically routed course by my father.  We were given a unique opportunity to create an even more dramatic routing and breathe life into a design that will ultimately be enjoyed for generations to come on an international scale.”

The Playa Grande Golf Course has been designed to offer players a balanced experience, with both the front and back nine featuring a mix of holes running along the cliffs. The gently rolling landscape – providing natural undulations, ideal for golf – are accented by wide fairways, meticulously contoured greens and Rees Jones’ signature wind swept coastal style bunkers.  Adding to its distinctive qualities, the course features what is being labeled as one of the finest finishes in the game of golf – which includes the dog-leg right par-5 on the 14th hole that allows golfers to finish on the cliff’s edge overlooking the beach, resort and ocean.  From there, the final four holes play along the rocky cliffs -- high above the ocean.  The final hole is a risk/reward par-5 – which requires the player to choose a shot from one cliff to another and over a cove of water in order to reach the green in two or take the safer three shot route around the ocean.

Led by PGA professional Julio Santos -- who was born in the Dominican Republic and is known today as one of the country’s most respected golf professionals and teachers -- the staff at Playa Grande Golf Course will offer a full program of instruction for all ages and levels of play, honoring the traditions and decorum of golf while making the game accessible to new and young players.  Instruction includes large on-practice putting greens, a practice fairway and short game area.

Amanera, designed by award-winning architect John Heah, stretches over more than 2,000 acres (810 hectares) of virtually untouched land and Atlantic seacoast, comprising verdant peaks and a lush jungle terrain with centuries-old trees and royal palms.  A limited number of branded residences are available for purchase, the Amanera Villas, and range from two to six bedrooms.  Tucked away within their own private enclave along the Playa Grande Golf Course and with magnificent ocean views, the amenity-rich homes are adjacent to the resort and managed by Aman.  Here, residents will benefit from all resort amenities, including the golf course and informal beach club, Club de Playa.

The Dominican Republic is accessible from major international cities, including Miami, New York, Puerto Rico, London and Frankfurt, among others.

Giving Thanks from Golfbreaks.com

The golf and travel experts at Golfbreaks.com list the Top 5 things for which they are most thankful in the game of golf

(CHARLESTON, SC) — Considering their profession, it is little wonder that the experts at Golfbreaks.com are particularly thankful for the game of golf. Since 1998, Golfbreaks.com has arranged golf trips for millions of golfers around the globe, establishing a reputation for expert service and great value.

No time better than the Thanksgiving season to reflect on what our experts love best about the game. So, as we let out our belts a notch or two and begin preparing for Thanksgiving, let us take a moment to reflect on our blessings. Of the many things we have to be thankful for in this wonderful game, here are five at the top of our list:

1. Golf course superintendents. These people perform golf’s most thankless task. They are working hard before the crack of dawn, performing backbreaking work over long hours in all sorts of weather conditions, often on weekends. Next time you see your superintendent pat him or her on the back and say, “Thank you very much, job well done.”

2. The under-four-hour round. Golf is challenging enough as is, and during the course of four or — heaven help us— five hours, we tend to run out of interesting things to say. It’s a blessing when we can be back at the clubhouse in three hours, trying to forget the bad shots while relishing the good.

3. Saturday morning golf groups: Fun people who take the game seriously but thankfully not themselves. With thick skin and good senses of humor, they are our comrades in arms. We’re thankful for good-natured bantering and kind courtesies; the keen eyes in finding a seemingly lost ball; and the polite inquiries about our families and jobs and as we enjoy our round together.

4. The kinship of golf and the manner in which the game brings people together. Like taking a trip overseas with your best golfing buddies, or your father, or your children. Which is why Golfbreaks.com has recently launched a website specifically for American golfers, USA.Golfbreaks.com — which will surely inspire anybody who has ever dreamed of teeing off at legendary links such as St Andrews, Royal Birkdale, Turnberry, or Royal County Down.

5. Finally, along those same lines, those of us at Golfbreaks.com are thankful that we are afforded the opportunity to play golf all over the world and on the same venues the professionals compete — something no other sport allows. Our company, a partner of both the European Tour and The PGA of Great Britain & Ireland, is now helping American golfers take the stress out of arranging their golfing pilgrimage. That means taking care of everything from tee times and hotel rooms to flights and ground transportation, as well as offering the best prices and packages to suit all budgets.

If you are a golfer looking for something a little more exciting than another trip over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house this Thanksgiving — whether it’s the greatest tee time of them all at the Old Course in St Andrews or an Irish links odyssey — the golf travel experts at Golfbreaks.com can assist Americans with their golf vacation of a lifetime at a price that won’t break the bank.

Now, anyone booking a golf vacation to the United Kingdom and Ireland for themselves and at least three others will receive a free Callaway Big Bertha Driver. All participants need to do is inquire for the vacation by November 30th, 2015 by contacting one of Golfbreaks.com’s expert sales advisers via the phone or through the website (USA.Golfbreaks.om). If you then go on to book the trip to the UK or Ireland for four or more golfers, you will receive a free Callaway driver.

McIlroy Clinches Back-to-Back Race to Dubai Titles

Northern Irishman ends season in style with scintillating success in the desert

(RELEASE) - Nine months on from his first victory of the 2015 season, Nike athlete Rory McIlroy concluded his campaign with another win in Dubai, this time at the DP World Tour Championship – a victory that also saw him finish atop the Race to Dubai standings for a second straight year.

Four-time Major champion McIlroy – who began the final round a shot behind the tournament leader on the Earth Course – debuted the new Nike Lunar Control 4 shoes, featuring dynamic Nike Flywire technology that provides lateral support in the midfoot, while a new, robust external heel counter helps lock the foot in place to support his powerful 120mph-swing from the ground up.

In addition to the Lunar Control 4, he also gamed a new Nike Vapor Prototype driver and Nike RZN Prototype golf ball. He led the driving distance chart for the week, averaging 322.1 yards off the tee for the four rounds at Jumeirah Golf estates, as he went on to record his third Race to Dubai title in four years.

"To finish my season in this way is so special, not just to win the Race to Dubai title but also to record another tournament victory on The European Tour – it’s incredibly-satisfying," said McIlroy after finishing 21-under-par, a shot clear of his nearest rival.

"I felt I had great control of my golf ball this week, off the tee and with my irons, and I certainly gained confidence as the tournament progressed on the greens," he added.

The 26-year-old McIlroy recorded a stunning total of 26 birdies, testament to his crisp ball-striking and clinical ability on the greens. The Northern Irishman was also using a Nike Method Prototype putter, as he signed for scores of 68, 68, 65 and 66, finishing in the top-5 for putts-per-round with an average of 28.3.

The victory in Dubai was McIlroy’s fourth of the campaign, following wins previously at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, WGC-Cadillac Matchplay and Wells Fargo Championship.

Inside the ropes at the RSM Classic with Titleist

(RELEASE) - The PGA TOUR is being treated to southern hospitality at the Tour’s final official tournament of the year, The RSM Classic.

Contested for the first time at both the Seaside and Plantation Courses at Sea Island Resort, the sixth edition of The RSM Classic has provided beautiful views along the ocean and through the marshes of southeast Georgia.

The par-72 Plantation Course plays at 7,058 yards, while the par-70 Seaside Course runs 7,005 yards. Titleist Brand Ambassador Robert Streb (7-under through 54 holes) looked to defend his title this week after he earned his first PGA TOUR crown in a playoff during the 2014 event, but Kevin Kisner (16-under) holds a three-shot lead heading into the final round.

Capping off the 2015 campaign, 105 players trusted a Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball for their success. That’s more than six times the nearest competitor with 16 and more than all competitors combined.

Titleist was also the top choice in the hybrid (27) and iron (41) categories. Vokey Design Wedges topped the approach, sand and lob wedge (200) category and Scotty Cameron putters were the top choice in the putter (62) category.

Check out our gallery above for an inside-the-ropes look at the tournament and good luck to all of #TeamTitleist!

Product Review: CEP Compression Socks

I’m a firm believer in creating comfort from the ground, up. If your feet hurt, your legs hurt and that pain can quickly move to your back and neck. Try playing quality golf based upon that scenario.

With that in mind, I was eager to test out German-made CEP compression socks. While they make knee-high compression socks and sleeves that pull up over the calf, I prefer no-show and short socks when playing golf.

Those of you who wear no-show socks are undoubtedly aware of heel slippage. I was once walking off the first tee when my shoe “ate” my sock. Fixing it twice didn’t solve the problem, so I played the rest of the round with one sock. By the turn I had a blister and was miserable on the back nine. This will not happen with CEP, thankfully.

Both the no-show and low models provide targeted compression for improved support and fit, a seamless toe box and anatomically correct design (your left foot is different than your right, after all). The low sock also offers achilles stability for added support and protection.

Assuming you’ve spent plenty of time selecting the right shoe for your foot ... Why not give that comfort an added boost with a quality pair of socks? If you walk the course, like I do, your feet will thank you after 4+ hours trudging up and down miles of hills and valleys.

Listen, golf can be hard enough under ideal circumstances. Don’t let sore, tired feet be a hinderance to your game. We all look for advantages when we can get them. Don’t allow your game to be hit with this disadvantage when it can easily be avoided.

CEP socks aren’t cheap. Nothing worthwhile ever is. You’ll pay $18.50 for the no-show and $22.50 for the low. But here’s the kicker: Their return policy is as simple as it gets. If you don't like them, send them back. If your socks wear out early, they'll replace them. if you’re unhappy with your CEP product for any reason within the first 30 days, they'll give you a full refund. Need more time? If you feel your socks are no longer providing the proper level of compression within the first six months, they'll coordinate a replacement.

What do you have to lose ... aside from sore feet?

Check out www.cepcompression.com to learn more or to order some for yourself.

Swing Evaluations include video analysis, motion measurement, a fact-based diagnosis and a lesson plan to follow. During these 60-minute sessions GolfTEC’s Certified Personal Coaches use the company’s patented g-SWING technology to quantify each student’s swing and compare it to Tour averages. This data is used to build a personalized Game Plan that will address the changes needed to help golfers of all skill levels achieve longer, straighter shots and lower scores.

Highly efficient and boasting a 96 percent success rate, GolfTEC lessons are taught one-on-one by Certified Personal Coaches in private, mostly indoor bays that utilize proprietary teaching technology. Developing a comprehensive improvement plan for each student is the foundation of GolfTEC’s philosophy.

“Winter is the perfect time to utilize our climate controlled indoor hitting bays and these gift packages ensure high-quality off-season training,” says Joe Assell, Co-Founder and CEO of GolfTEC. “Our goal has always been to grow the game by creating better players who are excited to play more often and share golf with new people at every chance.”

Committed to strengthening the industry and hiring only the best staff, GolfTEC employs nearly 600 coaches, most of whom have taught thousands of lessons. Each goes through a rigorous multi-week certification at GolfTEC University, including continued advanced training to master the analysis of golf swing mechanics, the technology of the GolfTEC system and the most productive teaching techniques.

Among the technologies currently employed:
• g-SWING teaching technology – This patented software program displays real-time video with motion measurement, while capturing body positions throughout the swing. Coaches use the information to diagnose, communicate and measure the changes that will lead to improvement.
• TECfit – Using Foresight launch monitors to capture critical performance data – ball flight, ball speed, clubhead speed, launch angle, sidespin and backspin – coaches cross-reference this information with the proprietary SwingLabs database to help select ideal clubs for each student’s swing. They can then accurately illustrate changes in ball performance that result from club adjustments.

DuoTrac Golf Offers Simple, Accurate Swing Feedback

First Ever 4DVP Multi-Sensor Technology and App is a Game Changer

(MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.) - Coach Labs, Inc. is releasing DuoTrac Golf as the first part of a multiple sports series in wearable, multi-sensor technology via a 28-day Kickstarter campaign Nov. 24, 2015.

DuoTrac is a multi-point, motion-tracking, portable sensor-based device and mobile app that can be used in multiple sports to analyze and improve swing performance. The multi-sensor technology uses a four-point system that doubles the accuracy of other sports swing analyzers and portable sensor technology. The initial product launch is focusing on the golf industry and will be unveiled at the 2016 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla., January 26-29.

Jason Koo, founder of Coach Labs, Inc., is a frustrated golfer who understands the challenges of becoming a better golfer. “The key to playing better golf is having a fundamentally sound swing,” states Koo. “We’ve all encountered good and bad days out on the course. During a typical golf lesson, the instructor fixes our nagging habits, but these often return when practicing the techniques on our own. This frustration motivated me to create a device that can help train proper swing technique and footwork for golfers when a teaching pro is not around. DuoTrac Golf eliminates the guesswork and delivers simple accurate feedback for each and every swing.”

Golfers can now experience a “virtual” on-the-go golf coach.

DuoTrac Golf is designed for golfers of all abilities from amateurs to professionals. The set-up process is easy and very user friendly. DuoTrac Golf can be worn for practice on the range or on the course. DuoTrac’s mobile application provides game statistics including swing history and comparisons, greens in regulation GIR, distances to the hole, putts/hole per game, overall score and stats. With enhanced accuracy through our 4DVP analysis and advanced hardware, golfers can use DuoTrac to set goals while tracking their progress and improvement week after week.

DuoTrac’s founder, Jason Koo, has 20 years’ experience as an inventor and product developer that spans retail, promotional products, electronics, sports and technology. He has created global brands through mass-marketing with Sunglass Hut, Walmart, Target, CVS, and Best Buy to name a few. Koo is excited to launch DuoTrac on Kickstarter to share this project with a community that encourages backer support and feedback. The 28-day campaign begins Nov. 24, 2015 with rewards that are certain to get golfers excited.  Some early bird price points start out as low as $79 for two sensors and $149 for the 4DVP four sensor complete set.

Initial production and delivery of DuoTrac Golf is scheduled for early 2016. Baseball, football, and tennis devices will be released in spring 2016.
